●What is "Record Battler?" |
"Record Battler" is a musical play-game that anyone can join, just like UNO or Monopoly. The point where "Record Battler" differs from such games, is that you play with recorded music instead of cards and game boards. It is a DJ party, organization (operation) system, game piece, and a composition co-created by the participants. No need for approval to organize or join a "Record Battler" event, as long as it is operated under the name and rules of it. Simply put, the "Record Battler" is a DJ relay. After a DJ plays a track, the next voluntary DJ would take over the mixing and track selection to pass it on to the next DJ. The next DJ’s play shall be inspired by, for example, the track’s lyrics, genre, artist, BPM, etc. However, your play should not be rule-bounded. Try to pay attention to the vibe of the crowd and be flexible and creative to make the party even better. This is not a competition to show-off your DJ technique or your super-rare 7 inch. What you should prove is your tact, wit, and maybe your humor. The game rule of "Record Battler" 1. The DJ to start the event would be pre-assigned by the organizer. The lead-off DJ will play until the next DJ candidate steps forward. 2. If any of the stand-by DJs feel that they have a suitable subsequent track in their record bag, they should raise that record on top of their head. 3. The next DJ does not have to be the first one raising their hand (or record). The DJ at-booth is responsible to choose the next DJ. The chosen DJ should rush to the booth and get ready for his performance. When the next DJ is ready, following the directions of the former DJ, he should end or mix the track playing. 4. Each DJ’s job does not end by just playing their record. Carefully look-over the records that the DJ candidates raise over their head, and try to catch their intention of their choice. Based on your judgement, choose the DJ that seems to have the best idea. The DJs will communicate each other with pre-set hand signs to announce their thoughts (e.g. "That idea is no good" "I want to see if anybody else has a better suggestion" "That sounds nice"). Early decision shall give the next DJ allowance to prepare, but on the other hand, daringly not deciding the next DJ till the last moment, can produce a nice tension that may contribute to the next DJ’s tight performance. After choosing the next DJ, remain to the booth until you pick up your record. 5. If no DJ raises their hand, or if you decide not to pass the booth to the next one, you can choose and mix the next track by your self. However, one DJ cannot play more than 3 tracks in one turn. If the DJ plays 3 tracks and no one steps forward at that point, the previous DJ should automatically take over the booth. That DJ has the right to reset the theme and start his own set. 6. If the organizer does not mention, the DJs can bring their tracks in any kind of media, including digital data. If the organizer wants to specify the media, for example "12 inch records and 8cm CD’s only", he should mention that when announcing the event. Digital data is not always restricted, but is not recommended as well. By using digital data that has no visual images, the DJs may have trouble in understanding the next DJ’s proposal, to result the game to be a simple and random DJ relay. *Shuffle Time The Shuffle Time is a break event during the party. As you may have presumed from the event’s title, during Shuffle Time the DJs try to replicate iPod’s shuffle mode by hand. The most commendable DJ during Shuffle Time is the one that can completely reject the influence of the previous track’s theme, or your own self-consciousness. In other words, the anti-DJ is the one that wins this game. The rotation of the DJs should be arranged before the game starts. (CC BY-SA Kishino Yuichi 2010) |
